Re: Comics- The Good The Bad and The Ugly

I read the first six or seven issues of the Ultimates a couple of years ago and was really impressed with the way it was handled.

The Hulk storyline was pretty cool and I didn't expect what happened between Giant Man and the Wasp, glad Cap kicked his ass.

The only Ultimates stuff I've read since though was the crossover with Spider-Man in Ultimate Six which was also pretty good.

Yeah I liked the first Ultimates, never got a chance to read the second, but I know Loeb is doing 3 so I gotta catch up. If I buy a Hardcover I'm jacking it, I save my money and buy paper back, I'm not a gentle soul on books.

Trust me the Ultimates Hardcover is the better deal. Each trade is like 15 bucks the Hardcover is 30 and its over sized. Vol 2 hasnt finished yet Marvel is saying April or May. I dont expect much from Vol 3 beacuse Joe Madurelia has JUST finished issue 2 he's had about a year of lead time.

I think the Ultimates is a book that's had schedule problems since day one, certainly the first volume, issues were always late.

Not too sure about the second one though, I like Loebs work with the DC characters so I'll be tempted to pick up volume three when he starts writing it.

Volume 2 has been just as bad if not worse then vol 1. You get about 3 issues a year of Ultimates if your lukcy.

The thing is that Bryan Hitch is something of a perfectionist and his style is highly realistic and detailed.

Joe Mad on the other hand is just slow. He was announced as the artist shortly after Jeph loeb signed with Marvel. So he's had alot of time even if Jeph just starteed wirring a few months ago. I think they need to find faster artists.

Hitch would be a tough act to follow and there's no denying his work's incredible and very finely detailed as well.

I can see why Joe Mad might be intimidated and wants to make sure he gets it right, but it's really frustrating for fans of the book.

If it was a regular monthly I might've kept up with it a little longer, but I just lost interest when I had to go months between the issues.

These days I pretty much exclusively buy the TPB's, I work one weekend in four and theres not a local comic book store where I live.

So I have to make a special journey into the city to get my books, it's easier to just pick up the trades and have the full story.

Joe Mad also has a history of being slow. But the problem isnt exclusivley him. Marvel as a whole seems to allow latness to slide as long as the artist or writter are big names. DC does it as well but you see them trying now to get alot of thier books back on track with fill in stories.

Ult Hulk vs Wolverine is by far the best example of Marvel's lack of concerne when big names are involved. Daimond Linfeild one of the writters on lost is the writter issue 2 came out 1 year ago he just finished the script for issue 4. By all rights this book should have been taken away from him along timne ago.

I can understand how a writer could be late on an ongoing monthly at some point, but not being able to complete a six issue limited series on time is daft.

It happens too often with limited series, the best example is probably Kevin Smith's work on Daredevil Target and Spider-Man/Black Cat.

The artwork and storyline should really be finished prior to the series being published I mean it's only six issues for goodness sake.

Inexcusable :kane

Kevin Smith is probably the best example of someone who was beyond late. But you'd think that after someone like that pulled that kind of crap you wouldnt let it happen again.

Marvel and DC really need to stop just letting these big hollywood writters do whatever they want. Same with these so called "superstar" artists. Jim Lee is great but when it takes you a year to produce a single issue of a book that 's no good your worthless at that rate and not worth what your being paid.
