Re: Comics- The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Finished reading 'Like a Sniper Lining up his Shot,' it was okay, the ending sort of too depressing.

I enjoyed West Coast Blues more.

Re: Comics- The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Just put in an Amazon order for Sweets: A New Orleans Crime Story by Kody Chamberlain and Crossed by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows. I'm excited for both. Sweets, i read issue one and loved it. Real world crime drama sort of thing. Beautiful art.

And as for [sign in to see URL] it's one of the most hardcore, revolting, violent comics ever made. So I just had to buy it. I haven't read anything but reviews for it so i' not entirely sure what i'm getting into with it but it's about a strange virus that starts infecting people, turning them into killing machines, except the twist is they aren't zombies and they aren't mindless. Its more like the virus just strips from them absolutely everything that makes a person good and replaces it with nothing but the most sadistic thoughts imaginable. Its like the Hostel movies meets 28 Days Later i guess. Sounds good to me!

Ooooh, will wait for your mini review on those books!

Btw, I bought the two volumes of Cowboy Ninja Viking and it is great! Pure entertainment.

I'm also enjoying Orbital, a French sci-fi title.

Well, odds are that it will end up in development hell. But Disney picked up the film rights last year and hired Wernick and Reese to write it. They are the guys who wrote the insanely fun Zombieland and did the current script for the Deadpool movie which got nothing but praise. So if anyone can do the comic justice, it's those two.

Okay, amazon delivered today and I finished Vol. 1 of Crossed in one sitting. It wasn't as violent or as revolting as all the reviews had lead me to believe. Honestly, if you read The Walking Dead its nothing you really haven't seen yet. But that [sign in to see URL]'s def got some messed up stuff in it. Dead and mutilated Children, rape of both sexes, a bit of nudity.

Overall its really pretty much the same sort of story as The Walking Dead. The same story except that instead of undead zombies it's heartless, sadistic psychopaths. They can think and plot like normal people and live for nothing other than causing death and carnage.

Garth Ennis wrote it and while i've never really been a fan of his, i've never really read much of his stuff either. He really won me over with this book. Really really great stuff. i give it 8.5/10

Cool, thanks BSF! Ennis used to be an excellent writer and I have been a long time follower of Ennis, from Hellblazer (which the movie heavily borrowed from) to Preacher. Then he kind of lost steam imho with Bloody Mary, Once a Pilgrim, and his writing sort of devolved to this 'give them a shock each issue' kind of writing. But then I felt he redeemed himself with his Punisher MAX run (even though it was still 'give-them-a-shock-each-issue' sort of writing).

I didn't care much for the comic he did about that rogue superhero team that takes down other superheroes... it was so mediocre to me that I've forgotten the title now!

I'll check out Crossed!

Btw, have you read the Unknown by Waid? It's for free download on Comixology and it's pretty good.

Well i never really followed Ennis at all, but i really really like what he did with Crossed. It does fall in to the major shock per issue sort of pacing, but it fits with the world that he and Jacen Burrows created in the book. Danger lurks around every corner and is ready to strike at any moment. Plus it really puts every character in play as far as mortality goes, so it does keep you on your toes as a reader. If you can stomach the violence, i highly suggest it.

And yes, I love Unknown. I got both volumes off Comixology. It was a really good little series there. Unfortunately it will never be finished as the reason its free is because the artist/co-creator died so BOOM! is giving it away in tribute. Really sad cause he was a great artist and it was a great comic. I hope maybe Waid will finish it off in novel format or something at some point.

Oh, that's so sad! I did not know that at all about artist of The Unknown... I'm not that familiar with Waid's work, but I quite like The Unknown. I'll continue to read it with a newfound appreciation.

As for violence in comics, I think I can handle the worst of the worst! lolz

But one manga I could barely stomach was the ultra, ultra violent manga Battle Royale... although I read the novel (translated from Viz), the comic is brutally violent and intestines are exquisitely drawn... also had some issues with this other sick manga called Shigurui aka Death Frenzy... the anime was no where as sick as the manga.
