My First Gundam

I guess you can consider this a small review, let me just say sorry about the quality of the pics, it's both the cameras and my fault.

Ok, up front I'll just have to say this: I have no idea what a Gundam is, I've never watched the series, movie, whatever... From what little I've seen online makes me think that it's not something I'd be interested in either.

The style of robots is completely opposite to what I've expected a Mobile Suit, Mech, or Gear to look like; having grown up loving Battletech and Mechwarrior designs (Timberwolf), I'm used to the bigger blocky designs. The Gundams felt to artsy-fartsy with all the sharp edges and spikes everywhere.

Anyway, one day, while cruising the Sci-Fi section at HLJ I happen across what was called a "GM Sniper Custom"; to my surprise it's a Gundam and a blocky one at that! Apparently some Gundams have armor add-ons (now I liked the sound of that). I'm of the philosophy that, if it looks good, might as well try it. So I ordered the sucker, and now he's here.

This particular Gundam belongs to the GFF line, now if I got this right, it means that while not as articulate as some of other lines in the franchise, it does have a better paint job as well as a whole set of alternate parts that come with the figure.

Ok, I'm thinking you're tired of reading at this point so here's a pic......more after you continue reading.

Now on to the figure itself, the guy comes in a pretty big box filled with accessories and alternate parts. The extra parts are there to convert the "Sniper" into a more traditional Gundam; the guy comes with an alternate chest piece, alternate shoulder armor, alternate shin/calf/rear leg armor, 3 different heads, 4 different shields, and whole bunch more, you can pretty much mix and match whatever you like.

Oh and did I mention weapons? Weapons galore!!! Very nice detailed sculpts, some of which have detachable parts to "stow away" on the Gundam.

Now this customizing comes at a price, the ease with which you can replace parts for others means that sometimes these things fall off when trying to change poses. I can only answer this with....glue. Once I figured out what I really liked on the guy, I glued it there.....it's funny cause he looks exactly like he did out of the box.

Now articulation, hmmm, these past few months have been filled with RAHs, Revoltechs, Jin Rohs and Toy Soldier accurate military figures, all of which have articulation up the wazzooo. So, in comparison, the GFF is decent.....not great, not ok, just decent. The shoulder joint is one that's pissing me off, it can rotate outwards by 90 degrees which is cool, but annoying when you don't want it too because it's somewhat loose. I would have preferred if they just kept it a pivot joint like every other robot design out there. On the other hand the sculpts are very nice, quite detailed for something this small, and a beautiful paint job, not to mention the large number of parts. Which has it's downside, millions of twisty ties, no.....!

Overall it's a pleasant little figure, a nice enough experience that I'll be looking at getting some of the other "Heavy" designs. I've already ordered a Zeonography, considered an offshoot of the GFF line, it deals with the bad guys (who have nicer designs imo), and is supposed to be a more refined line.

On to the pics, kept you waiting long enough, eh?

lol, like I said I have no idea of the toy/kit side of the franchise, this was more of an impulse buy. If any of the true kits "look" good (and I mean the heavy style of design) I'll be sure to get one. Any recommendations? How hard is it to put one together?

I've had alot of MG (master grades) and that was the level I was stuck on..

Both PGs and MGs have an endoskeleton you can build off of.. which is amazing!!

This is the Perfect Grade Wing Zero Custom.
the PG has diecast parts if I remeber correctly

Well, I'm not too keen on gluing things together and painting, i don't have the space for a true workbench like I used too. I keep hearing about snap-fit models, are they detailed enough?

all of them are snap together. if you ever wanted to start, get 1/44th's they're cheap and easy to build... very detailed too.

So basically an MG 1/144 would be a good start? How's articulation?

Re: My First Gundam

yeah start out with 1/44th's theres the regular ones and the Higher Grade ones.. which is a bit more diffcult. doesn't matter they're all easy IMO. The Articulation is great!! but look at my previous post of the Perfect Grades.
