Electric Dragon 80,000 V- Movie and figures

Has anyone seen this movie...?
Holy freakin sh*t on a stick, it blew me away. fellow medi-worlders you HAVE to check it out.
I can best descibe it as a B/W superhero, tecno punk, rocn'n'roll, arthouse, lowbrow, middlebrow, highbrow assault on your nervous system...and weather you like it or not it will affect you. so I'd advise

1- Get hold of a copy of the film.

2- Kick back however you see fit...get into your chosen method of relaxation, a few brews for most, but Reefer Shark will enjoy it I'm sure.

3- Hook your DVD player up to the best sound system you can...if you have a surround sound system prepare to be melted!

4- Put the film on and TURN THE SOUND UP AS HIGH AS YOU DARE and be blown away.

OK, OK I admit it's not for everyone, but it was sooo cool and I didn't know what to expect at all.
The only reason I got the movie was that back in January I scored Medicom 1/6 figures of the two lead characters 'Dragon Eye Morrison' and 'Thuderbolt Buddah' for a stupidly low price, I am now so made up, as I love the movie.
Why more people don't know about this film is a mystery to me, it's got 'CULT' written large all over it. Just the closing titles are a work of art.

Is that a Asano Tadanobu movie??!! I love that guy! I will definitely have to check this out. I wonder if they have it in my local Blockbuster. I used to be with LoveFilm.com and they had EVERYTHING! but the service was so bad i had to leave. and they even made that an ordeal.

Thanks for the tip, Jeff.

Yep, 8S, it does indeed star Tadanobu Asano as the titular Dragon Eye Morrison, Masatoshi Nagase is Thunderbolt Buddah and it's directed by Sogo Ishii (who apparently has pretty cult status in Japan). The movie failed at the box office, and I can kind of see why. It's not everyones cup of tea, and certainly doesn't fit the bill as a mass market comodity/product, which is all the more reason I admire Medicom for doing the 1/6 figures. But I have to say if you approach it in the right mind frame it is phenomenal. A work of art.

a lot of japanese cinema is slightly unhinged though, don't you think?. some of it works and some if doesn't. for me anyway. if you like asano, check out VITAL. i really liked it although many people don't. it was an excellent movie (a lot like "The Fountain" in style, which I absolutely loved. one of the best films of the year for me. Arronofsky is a genius).

then there are others like Casshern, which I didn't like very much. Will definitely check this out though - looks cool.

I shall try and check VITAL out, the only film that springs to mind thats slightly like Electric Dragon would be Tetsuo the Iron Man, but that was much darker in it's subject matter.
I quite liked Casshern, far from perfect but it sure looked good. But when it comes to weiredositude in Japanese cinema, have you seen 'The Happiness of the Katakuris', takes it to a whole other level!

yeah, a lot of people really liked Casshern. maybe i'll have to see it again. i might not have been in the right frame of mind.

did you like ichi the killer? i thought that was pretty good. i quite enjoyed azumi and versus too although they're not masterpieces by any stretch of the imagination. just high-octane violent fun.

i really will have to check out that 'The Happiness of the Katakuris' - sounds good. Will have to get it on a lazy summer day when your mind is in the perfect state to accept movies like that.

do you like older japanese cinema too? like kurosawa or ozu? i like the modern stuff but the older stuff just blows me away. there's something about those older black and white films that just gets me. i really like old indian cinema too, before it all got ridiculous.

I have to admit it probably sounds like I watch more Japanese cinema than I do and still haven't seen many of what are considered classics like 'Ichi the killer'.
I have a few of Kurosawas on DVD, the Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and it kind of goes without saying The Seven Samurai (though I have to admit i still havent got aroun to watching Yojimbo, you'll know how hard it is to dedicate yourself to a simple two hours of entertainment when you have kids).
As for 'The Happiness of the Katakuris' I'm not even sure I'd reccomend it, it is just weird!
