Gauging Interest - a fee free ebay for collectors?
Hi everyone,
Sick of ebay? I just got snubbed by a non-payer and lord knows I've been snubbed many a time as a buyer. I know we have good trade sections here at the site and at others and thats great. But how would people feel about an offsite auction service solely for collectors? I want all honest thoughts because I've only just thought about developing it. It would mean months of work and I only want to start if people think it would be helpful.
Some basic ideas:
1. The site would solely be for toys and collectibles - 1/6 figures, 1/12, statues etc.
2. Only members from here, SSF, Hot Toys Chatterbox, OneSixthWarriors with a significant post count can register. Just like here regsitrants will be screened by a voting system where existing members can vouch for the new guy.
3. Absolutely no selling fees whatsoever! There may have to be a few small ads here and there (purely collectible based) to pay for hosting, maintenance and software.
4. Haven't thought about how payment would work yet, but direct communication between sellers would probably be best.
5. A community complaints forum where other members decide disputes (but hopefully if we're all friends it won't happen often).
6. There would be buy it now and auction style listings only. No ebay stores style shops for retailers. Customisers could have there own section if they wanted where orders can be filled (although not sure how necessary that would be - i think customisers might prefer the current system).
It's just a thought really. ebay claims to be a community but it's anything but - it's more like a corrupt dictatorship. they don't protect sellers or buyers just their own fees. let me know what you think. if nothing else, I'd hope it would give people a central place to trade, especially to those who are members of several forums and have to post several times. this could hopefully be a good sister site to all the collectible forums.

Re: Gauging Interest - a fee free ebay for collectors?
wow, seems to be a much more positive response here than at SSF. but there were some good constructive criticisms there - auction styles could spark disputes so BIN and best offer seem to be favoured. what do you guys think?
also, the community dispute thing was labelled a bad idea. i might have to agree with that one.
i'm going to wait a little longer before deciding to go ahead. thanks for the offer of help jkno4u, i might need it!

I think its a good idea!
Listings fees & all the other rules & regulations is something that I hate, which is why I seldom sell on ebay.
I do agree that having just Buy It Now and best offer is a good form of control.
That way, sellers can simply accept whichever offer they think is acceptable to them. It will also prevent items from going to sky high prices and allow everyone a more equal chance of getting a certain item.
I would be glad to help too but Im not really a IT or programming person but I'll do what I can!

Re: Gauging Interest - a fee free ebay for collectors?
I think that's a great idea. The fees on eBay are a little bit ridiculous. The only thing that doesn't sound so good (though it makes sense) is that someone like myself, who has very little posts, wouldn't be able to register. I understand why, I mean, someone could just register here then join at this selling place and have no intention of being civilized. But there's probably other people like me who lurk MediWorld all the time.
All in all though, this does seem like a great idea and hopefully everything works out. I'd like to see it happen.

Re: Gauging Interest - a fee free ebay for collectors?
I've heard rumors that GOOGLE is thinking about starting an auction site & I would seriously love that because:
1. They're a great company
2. It would kill eBay!
