Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
Year One is my fave Batman book too. I don't think any other Batbook can touch it so far.
I'm more of a story guy, art is secondary.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
Year One is another of those Batman graphic novels I've been meaning to pick up forever. I should really get it because it's fairly easy to come by where I live.
As for art vs story. I agree the story is the most important thing, but if I haven't heard much about how good a graphic novel is then artwork tends to be a big deciding factor in whether or not I buy it. I hate painted books which is why I've never given Batman Arkham Asylum a chance, even though I've heard it's amazing. I was gonna read Daredevil as well a while ago but couldn't get past the painted artwork. I don't mind Alex Ross style realism, it's just the swirly weird stuff that gets on my nerves.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
Arkham Asylum... not that great, imho. I've got the first printing HC from aeons ago.
Much of Daredevil also not impressive for me, including Miller's run. However, I do have to recommend "The Man without Fear" by Frank Miller. It's Daredevil's origin retold, and similar in feel to Batman: Year One. On DD, I also loved Frank Miller's "Elektra Lives Again." Don't miss that one if you love ninjas and beautiful gothic architecture. You see a lot of Sin City-esque stuff, as Miller re-used a lot of the stuff in Elektra Lives Again later in his Sin City books. The story is a bit thin, feels like a dream, but damn it's a beautiful book. "Spider-Man: Reign" which came out a decade later, totally copied off Elektra Lives Again's art style, but unfortunately wasn't that great overall.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
I bought The Joker graphic novel by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo on Friday. It's an original graphic novel, not just reprinted comic books and it rocks.
Gotta be the grimest Joker story I've read since The Killing Joke. Some nice moments and the look of the character was obviously based on Heath Ledger's Dark Knight version. Not much Batman in this one, but plenty of the other villains turn up including grittier takes on Two Face, Penguin, Killer Croc and Harley Quinn. The only reimagining I didn't care for much was the Riddler. Well worth checking out though and the final phrase at the end of the story is a classic.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
I'll try and pick up the Joker graphic novel. I like 100 Bullets which is also by Azzarello. Volume 12 is shipping to me as we speak, along with The Walking Dead HC 4 along with the latest Fables trade.
Okay, now I gotta recommend a book...
I just read DC/Vertigo's "Scalped" volume 3. I have to give this series my highest recommendation. It's a crime book, very noir. It has a PLOT, an actual story! Almost every character is badass and tough as nails. Torture scenes. A main character who knows martial arts and kicks serious ass. Moments which will move you, moments which will shock you and make you go "holy !@#$." Then you'll go, damn, I can't believe I have to wait six months for the next volume!! The art is terrific. Just go and buy this book now before they cancel it! Btw, the writer is Jason Aaron, supposedly he is taking over Garth Ennis and writing The Punisher Max now. I can't wait to read his take on Frank Castle.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
I hadn't heard of scalped but from what you say about it in your post it sounds like the writer would be well suited to doing Punisher stories.

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
I've not read any books for ages but I'm looking at getting Gears of War:The Battle of Aspho Fields by Karen Traviss as it provides some nice backstory to the events in the games.
I also want to start collecting the old Target Doctor Who novels as they're pretty cheap to pick up on ebay and cover just about every Classic era.

Speaking of Gears, did you get Live yet? I've been playing Horde mode, it's a lot of fun!

Re: Nobody Reading Anything Lately
Hey, any of you guys here ever read Ashley Wood's comic books? Like Popbot, D'Airain Aventure, or WWR? Are they any good?
