EVANGELION : 1.01 You Are (Not) Alone.

I recently watched the 1st installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion.
I'd been looking forward to this ever since I heard they were going to do it. I have to say I was disappointed with the final result of this 1st installment. I'm such a fan of the original series...it's phenomenal to say the least. I thought that this new version looked slick overall, but felt there was a lot missing in this streamlined version. It was like watching a summary for me. The weight of the characters and their personalities were lacking because of this. Original supporting characters where no were to be found or had their speaking roles completely removed.
A much larger world made smaller.

My advice would be to watch the platinum edition of the regular series, making sure to watch the Director's Cut versions of Ep. 21-24 instead of the aired versions (included). Then straight on to "The End Of Evangelion" movie (which replaces episodes 25 and 26). You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the review of the remake.

I have all the original ones released by ADV, but not the Director's cut of the last few episodes. I also have The End of Evangelion, but I have never watched it as I meant to rewatch the entire series, but as they say, life happened, and it went by the wayside. I'll have to put some time aside and just watch the series beginning to end, once and for all one of these days.

Any chance of any McHaley Eva art? That would be cool!

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to do some Eva art. It's just that there are sooo many things I have to paint first. Someday...For now I'll have to settle on a Voltron project (coming up) to satisfy my inner mecha monster. I'd also like to do some Ultraman art at some point.

Agreed on what you said, 1.0 ain't that great. It's more like a summary of the first 6 to 7 episodes. What I like about it are the new animations, everything was much more improved & refined and nothing from the TV series was reused. Shinji is less whiny but I thought that took out a lot of the character development and the characteristics that made Shinji what he is.

That said, I like it much better on a second viewing and appreciate why they cut certain stuff out.

But don't let 1.0 stop you from watching any of the future installments because 2.0 kicks ass!!!

2.0 rewrites everything from the tv series and I mean everything!!! All of it is for the better, the new animations, battle scenes and characters will blow you away and you will really really look forward to the next two installments.

I'm hoping to catch 2.0 one last time b4 they take it down off my local cinema...argh gotta find time to do it.

btw, I've never watch the Director cuts version, mind sharing what are the differences in it?

Kaido - You should definitely rewatch the whole tv series, follow by the movies Death & Rebirth and The End of Evangelion to complete the whole Evangelion experience. Then once you get the chance, follow it up with 1.0,2.0 and the two remaining 3.0,4.0 which are still in the production process.

Unfortunately I don't have death and rebirth and I don't think I'll be able to find it or buy it anymore, but I will revisit what I do own. I heard Death & Rebirth was a psychedelic rehash of previous episodes? Is that true?

Kaido, You don't have to watch Death & Rebirth if you watch the directors cuts of the above episodes I mentioned. And that (sort of) answers your question, KazukiJuN: The directors cuts were done after Death & Rebirth and incorperates some of that into the directors cuts that flow more smoothly and lead directly into The End Of Evangelion.
It's really cool...but each Platinum version comes with a 12 page book (84 pages in all with all 7 discs) that contain detailed specs and analysis on all the Angels and characters, plus a time line of Nerv's inception before the series starts (the year 2015). The 1st volume even include a Nerv parking sticker for your car...I got a kick out of that.

I was hoping that 2.0 would be as you said...so I probably will check it out, once it goes comes to the states.

Unfortunately, I paid top dollar for the original releases back then ($30 a disc or something like that?) and I don't want to spend money on the Director's cut as affordable as they are today. You guys just fill me in later when I need some help, okay?

Help understanding the last couple of episodes of the TV series! I remember watching it and getting confused (and sleepy!).
