The Thing!
Okay, The Thing is my all time favourite horror film, so when it was announced a remake was being made, I was not happy at all. The special effects still stand up just fine in todays world of over used CGI so why bother redoing it all? Then it turned out it was actually going to be a prequel, so I became more accepting of it's existence. Last night I saw the remake/prequel and I have to say that I totally loved it! It fits the bill of a prequel with so many nice little nods to the 1982 version and it also fits the bill as a remake by essentially hitting all the same sort of tense moments and ideas of the classic one as well. Basically, you can watch them together, back to back and not really notice much that doesn't fit together. I can only think of a few things that didn't line up properly but they were minor and don't affect the overall joint plot of the series.
If you like horror, and/or liked/loved The Thing, go see this one.

Re: The Thing!
I will check it out for sure, but probably when it's on movie channel or blu ray... Sadly, no chance to go to the movies these days...

Re: The Thing!
I saw it. It was actually pretty enjoyable.
I was a little skeptical, especially since the reviews panned it. In terms of FX, yes, there's a lot of CG, but there's also a lot of practical FX. Its about 50/50. Supposedly it was first done all with just practical FX, but after the initial viewing, though cool, the director felt it just felt too 80's to fit with the rest of the lighting/cinematography.
I can see how that happens. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. Make sure you stick around for the first part of the end credits. At first the crowd was like WTF when the credits started rolling...but then...the crowd ended up cheering and clapping.
Overall, not a bad movie, not a great movie, but very, very faithful to the Carpenter version. I say give it a shot.
P.S. I'm also a huge fan of Carpenter's The Thing. So I was extremely skeptical

Re: The Thing!
It was neat to get home and throw in the original and start watching it and remembering all the cool little nods, like the grenade box the norse dudes have in the chopper at the start of the original, and the Axe in the wall in their camp and stuff like that. It isn't a groundbreaking movie by any stretch but its far better than it had any right to be and it was made with serious care and attention to detail, which i really respect
